How much does a wine tasting cost in Napa in 2026?

$79 a person for a standard tasting and $125 for a reserve tasting on average, roughly double the US figures of $39 and $70.

The figures come from the SVB 2026 Direct-to-Consumer Wine Report, as reported by the Napa Valley Register in June. Individual wineries spread wide around that average. Visit Napa Valley quotes about $20 to $200 and up.

Some real 2026 prices: V. Sattui charges $45 for its Mercato Tasting and $55 outdoors. Sterling Vineyards starts at $55 with the gondola ride and climbs to $150. Castello di Amorosa adds a $4.95 booking fee online. Napa visitors also buy more: an average of $454 of wine per visitor in the tasting room, against $197 nationally.

Are Napa tasting fees going down?

Barely. 29% of Napa wineries cut their fees in 2025, but the average standard fee only fell from $80 to $79.

Visitation to wine country has slid since 2022, and wineries are responding. The Napa Wine Project lists examples: Honig sells a 30-minute, three-wine "Fly by Flight" for $30, and Bella Union cut its top tasting by $50 to $125 while raising the standard one by $20 to $65. Cuts at the bottom, raises in the middle. The average hardly moves.

SVB's Rob McMillan was blunt about the market: "stabilization is not recovery." For you that means more offers and quieter weekdays, not cheap Napa. Tasting fees nationally have roughly doubled since 2018.

Do you tip at Napa wineries, and how much?

Tipping is optional, but most tasting rooms now show a tip prompt. Visit Napa Valley suggests $10 to $20 per couple, more for private tastings.

The old rule was clear. In 2015 the Napa Valley Vintners wrote that "you are also not expected to tip the hospitality staff or educators at a winery." Then the pandemic moved tastings from bars to seated, table-served sessions, and the tip line arrived. Galen Becker Drace of the Napa Valley Hospitality Forum told the San Francisco Chronicle that more than 75% of Napa tasting rooms now use prompts, up from fewer than half before.

Visit Napa Valley's current guide suggests, per couple: $10 to $15 for a stand-up bar tasting, $15 to $20 for a seated one, $20 or more for boutique or private experiences, and 20% for large groups. Is wine tasting cheaper in Sonoma than in Napa?

Yes. Sonoma's standard tasting averages $47, about $32 less than Napa's, and most Sonoma wineries take visitors without appointments.

Sonoma cut harder: its average standard fee dropped $7 to $47 in 2025, while the reserve average rose $3 to $95. Sonoma County Tourism counts more than 425 wineries, "mostly open for tours and tastings without appointments".

This matters more than people think, because many "Napa" day trips from San Francisco spend much of the day in Sonoma. Which Napa wine tours include tasting fees?

Most day trips from San Francisco include their tastings. The Napa-based picnic, trolley, e-bike and private tours leave them to you.

This is where the $79 average bites. A tour price can look cheap until you add three tastings. The table uses the Napa average for the tours that don't include fees; boutique wineries on guided tours often charge less, and some waive the fee if you buy a bottle.

Read the trolley listing closely. Its includes list mentions tasting fees, but its "Know before you go" says they are paid on the day at each venue. Budget for them. The private tour is priced per group of up to 4, so split it before comparing. On every tour, you must be 21 to taste.

How can you pay less for tastings in Napa?

Buy a bottle where the fee is waived, go midweek, use walk-in tasting rooms, or pick a tour that includes its tastings.

Some wineries waive the tasting fee when you buy wine. It isn't universal, so ask at the start, not at the till. The picnic tour's listing says fees may be waived with a bottle purchase. V. Sattui pours a free three-wine flight Tuesday to Thursday.

Fewer, better stops beat more stops. Visit Napa Valley recommends two or three winery visits a day. At $79 each, a fourth tasting is mostly a way to spend $79.
