If you mainly want to taste, Tasting on the Rails pours wines from Charles Krug, Chandon, Trefethen, Tate, Beaulieu Vineyard, Belle Glos and Ghost Block, which is a better wine education than many winery visits.

Is the Napa Wine Train worth the price?

Worth it as a special-occasion meal with a view. Not worth it as a wine tour: most packages stop at no wineries and include one glass of wine.

The train publishes no from-price; live rates in its booking engine include all mandatory fees. One local operator put the range at just under $200 to more than $800 per person in 2025. On GetYourGuide the Vista Dome lunch or dinner is from $410.

For that you get three hours, a four-course meal cooked on board, a mahogany-and-brass car and the valley sliding past. That is a good restaurant evening. For the same money two people can do the picnic tour with three wineries and their fees. Book the train for the meal, not for the wine.

What is included in a Wine Train ticket?

The train ride, the meal and one welcome glass of wine. Further wine, cocktails and beer are sold on board. The event fee is in the ticket price.

The Wine Train FAQ says every experience includes a complimentary welcome glass and that other drinks are extra. The Gourmet Express adds coffee, tea and a digital boarding photo; a sommelier flight is an optional add-on.

The GetYourGuide listing describes a 1952 Pullman glass-dome car with mahogany, brass and etched glass, food cooked on board, and the 36-mile round trip from Napa to St. Helena with no winery stops. Other drinks are paid on board. It is not suitable for children under 13 or for people with mobility impairments.

Two differences from the valley tours: the cancellation window is two days rather than 24 hours, and staff call boarding by seating section 30 minutes before departure. Arrive early.

What should you wear on the Napa Wine Train?

Smart-casual. The train says smart-casual or festive attire is encouraged, especially for themed events. Jeans with a good shirt are fine.

Think of it as a nice lunch out rather than a gala. Bring a layer: the dome is sunny and warm by day, and evenings cool fast in the valley. The steps into the old cars are steep, so leave the highest heels at the hotel. For winery days, the etiquette guide covers jeans, sneakers and perfume.

Can children ride the Wine Train?

On most journeys, yes, and some packages have child rates. The Vista Dome package sold on GetYourGuide is not suitable for children under 13.

The official FAQ says children are welcome on most experiences and that some seasonal events have age limits. Anyone under 21 gets no wine, of course. With children under 13, book a Gourmet Express Lunch direct and check the package page before paying.

Where is the Wine Train station and how does boarding work?

At 1275 McKinstry Street in downtown Napa. For lunch, check in at 10:30am, board at 11:00, depart at 11:30 and return about 2:30pm.

• Lunch journeys (Gourmet Express, Vista Dome, Tasting on the Rails): check in from 10:30am, depart 11:30am, back about 2:30pm.
• Legacy Experience: check in from 9:45am, depart around 10:15am, six hours in all.
• Evening journeys: arrive by about 5:30pm.

The station is a short walk from Oxbow Public Market, so a downtown Napa hotel puts you on foot. The cars are restored antiques with steep steps; the line asks guests with mobility needs to call before booking (1-800-427-4124).

Wine Train or a winery tour?

A winery tour if the wine is the point; the train if the meal and the view are. They also combine well: the train one day, a small-group winery tour the next.

On a three-day trip we'd ride the train on arrival day, when you don't want to start tasting at 10am, and give the next day to wineries.
