Booking choice: The picnic lunch wine tour, from $148 per person. Check dates Tour details
A Napa wine tour costs $110 to $189 per person on this site, or $627 for a private car. That number is half the story. Most Napa wineries pour by appointment and charge for it, and the 2026 average for a standard tasting is $79 a head. Three of those on top of a $148 tour turns a reasonable day into a $385 one.
Some tours fold the tastings into the price; others leave them to you. Below, every tour on this site with the fees put back in, the private-car maths for two to four people, and the tipping numbers Napa's own visitor bureau publishes.
The quick answer
Winery tours that start in Napa cost $124 to $169 per person, but most of them leave the tasting fees to you: budget about $79 per winery, or $200 to $240 extra for a three-winery day. The day trips from San Francisco cost $110 to $189 with their tastings included. A private car is $627 for up to four, plus fees and lunch. Add $10 to $20 per couple in tips at each tasting and a tip for your driver.
How much does a Napa wine tour cost in 2026?
From $110 per person for a half day from San Francisco to $410 for the Wine Train. Most full-day tours cost $145 to $189 before any tasting fees.
Every tour on this site, cheapest first. The column that changes the maths is the third one.
| Tour | Starts in | Tasting fees | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day from San Francisco | San Francisco | Included, 2 wineries | $110 |
| ATV vineyard tour | Napa Valley | Included, 5 wines | $124 |
| Open-air trolley | Napa (Oxbow) | Budget for 3 wineries | $145 |
| Picnic lunch tour | Napa Valley | Paid at each of 3 wineries | $148 |
| Premium small group | San Francisco | Included, 2 wineries | $148 |
| Napa and Sonoma tour | San Francisco | Included, 3 wineries | $157 |
| E-bike from Yountville | Yountville | Paid at 1 or 2 wineries | $169 |
| Muir Woods, Napa and Sonoma | San Francisco | Included, 3 wineries | $179 |
| Sonoma small group | San Francisco | Included, plus lunch | $189 |
| Wine Train Vista Dome | Napa station | 1 welcome glass only | $410 |
| Private car from SF | San Francisco | Paid by you | $627 per group |
Prices are the GetYourGuide from-prices in USD for 2026 and they move with the season. The pattern is plain enough: the tours based in the valley sell you a driver and a set of booked slots, and the wineries bill you separately. The big San Francisco operators buy group tastings and bundle them.
Three boutique wineries and a picnic lunch, with pickup inside the valley. Tasting fees are paid on the day.

The average standard tasting in Napa costs $79 per person in 2026 and the average reserve tasting $125, about double the US averages of $39 and $70.
The figures come from the SVB 2026 Direct-to-Consumer Wine Report, published in June. Fees have stopped climbing: the Napa Wine Project notes the average dipped by a dollar and 29% of Napa wineries cut their prices as visitor numbers fell. A dollar is not a discount you will notice.
The spread around that average is wide. Visit Napa Valley quotes about $20 to $200 and up. A few real 2026 prices from the wineries' own pages:
- V. Sattui, St. Helena: Mercato Tasting $45, Premier Outdoor $55, Tour & Tasting $75, and a free three-wine flight Tuesday to Thursday (vsattui.com).
- Sterling Vineyards, Calistoga: Sterling Stroll $55 (ages 3 to 20: $25), Tour & Terrace $85, Hilltop $95, Founder's $150, each with the gondola ride (sterlingvineyards.com).
- Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga: reservation only, with a flat $4.95 online booking fee on top (castellodiamorosa.com).
Over the hill in Sonoma the averages are $47 standard and $95 reserve (2025 data). That gap is one reason the San Francisco day trips spend so much time there. The full fee picture for this year is in our 2026 tasting fees post.

What does each tour cost with tasting fees added?
Roughly $205 to $385 per person for the Napa-based tours that leave fees to you, against $110 to $189 all-in (food aside) for the San Francisco day trips.
For the tours where you pay at each winery, we added three fees at two price points: the $20 floor Visit Napa Valley quotes and the $79 average. Boutique wineries chosen by a guide often sit somewhere in between, and some waive the fee if you buy a bottle.
| Tour | From | Fees you add | Per person, all in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Picnic lunch tour | $148 | 3 wineries: $60 to $237 | About $208 to $385, lunch included |
| Open-air trolley | $145 | 3 wineries: $60 to $237 | About $205 to $382, lunch included |
| E-bike, full day | $169 | 2 wineries: $40 to $158 | About $209 to $327, picnic included |
| Private car, 4 people | $157 each | 2 to 3 wineries: $40 to $237 | About $197 to $394, plus lunch |
| Half day from SF | $110 | None | $110, plus food |
| Premium small group | $148 | None | $148, plus lunch |
| Napa and Sonoma tour | $157 | None | $157, plus lunch |
| Muir Woods day | $179 | None | $194 with the $15 Muir Woods entry, plus lunch |
| Sonoma small group | $189 | None | $189, lunch included |
Tips are not in these numbers. Neither is any wine you take home, and in Napa most people take some home.
The table flatters the San Francisco tours a little. They cost you two to four hours on the freeway, and on the Muir Woods day two of the three wineries are in Sonoma. If you are already staying in the valley, a $385 day of three hand-picked boutique cellars and a long picnic is a different product from a coach day with included pours, not just a pricier version of it.

The lowest all-in price to taste in Napa from the city: two Napa wineries with the tastings included, plus a hop-on hop-off bus pass.
Explore the half-day tour from San Francisco Tour detailsIs a private wine tour cheaper for a group?
Per person, yes once you fill it. The private car from San Francisco costs $627 for up to four: about $157 each for four, $209 for three and $314 for two, before tasting fees and lunch.
The private tour's listing gives a 6-hour day with a driver-guide, pickup anywhere in San Francisco and your choice of two or three wineries in Napa or Sonoma. Extra hours cost $95 each, for the group.
| Group size | Car per person | + 3 tastings at $79 | Per person before lunch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | $313.50 | $237 | About $551 |
| 3 people | $209 | $237 | About $446 |
| 4 people | $156.75 | $237 | About $394 |
| 4 people, 8 hours | $204.25 | $237 | About $441 |
For a couple it is the dearest way to see Napa. For four friends it costs about what the picnic tour does once fees are in, and you get to pick the wineries, the pace and the lunch stop. The catch: ask early who books the wineries, you or the driver, because popular ones fill weeks in advance.

Your own driver-guide for up to four, from anywhere in San Francisco. You choose the wineries.
Check dates for the private Napa tourWhy do some tours include tastings and others don't?
Because of how Napa works. Many wineries take guests by appointment only, so a Napa-based tour mostly sells the driver and the booked slots, and the winery charges its own fee.
Napa County's permit rules, in place since the 1990 Winery Definition Ordinance, mean that many wineries are open by appointment only, and some cap their daily guests. A small local operator books three slots for its group and you pay each winery as you would if you walked in on your own. That is why the picnic tour, the trolley and the e-bike tour list tasting fees as yours to pay.
The San Francisco operators work at volume. They have standing deals with partner wineries, several of them in Sonoma or the Carneros district, where fees run lower, and they put the tastings in the ticket. The Napa and Sonoma tour values its three at about $120; the premium tour says $95.
Neither model is a rip-off. Just compare like with like, which means fees in.
How can you save money on Napa wine tasting?
Ask about fee waivers when you buy bottles, use V. Sattui's free Tuesday to Thursday flight, go on a weekday, mix in walk-in tasting rooms and look at Sonoma.
- Buy, and ask. Some wineries waive the tasting fee when you buy wine. It isn't universal, so ask before you pay. The picnic and e-bike listings both say the fee may be waived with a purchase.
- The free flight at V. Sattui. Tuesday to Thursday, V. Sattui in St. Helena pours a free three-wine flight (vsattui.com). Its deli and picnic grounds make it the cheapest lunch stop in the valley too.
- Go midweek. Weekends book out first and the drive from San Francisco can take two hours instead of one.
- Taste downtown. Several downtown Napa tasting rooms around Oxbow and First Street take walk-ins at a bar (the walk-in list has names).
- Share a private car. With four people the per-head price of the car drops to about $157.
- Cross to Sonoma for a day. Average fees there are about $30 lower. See Napa or Sonoma.
- Travel in January. Lonely Planet names it the cheapest month for rooms; tasting rooms are quiet and the mustard is out. More in the best time to visit.

How much should you tip on a Napa wine tour?
At a tasting, Visit Napa Valley suggests $10 to $15 per couple at a standing bar, $15 to $20 seated and $20 or more at a boutique or private tasting. Tip your tour driver on top.
Tipping at tastings has become normal in Napa. More than 75% of tasting rooms now show a tip prompt, up from under half before the pandemic, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The current guidance from Visit Napa Valley:
| Where | Suggested tip |
|---|---|
| Stand-up bar tasting | $10 to $15 per couple |
| Seated tasting | $15 to $20 per couple |
| Boutique, private or VIP tasting | $20 or more per couple |
| Large groups | 20% of the winery bill |
| Your tour driver or guide | Expected; see below |
For the driver, Napa's vintners are clear that you should tip when you hire a transportation company, though they publish no figure. Our rule of thumb: $15 to $25 per person for a good full day on a group tour, and 15 to 20% of the fare for a private driver. The picnic tour lists guide tips as not included. On the Wine Train's Legacy Experience the line suggests $15 per person for meal service. More etiquette in the winery etiquette guide.
What else should you budget for?
Lunch on most San Francisco tours, the $15 Muir Woods entry, wine you buy, drinks on the Wine Train and, in September and October, much higher room rates.
- Lunch. Included on the picnic, trolley, full-day e-bike and Sonoma small-group tours. On the Napa and Sonoma, Muir Woods and premium tours you buy it on Sonoma Plaza.
- Entry fees. Muir Woods costs $15 on top of the Muir Woods tour, per the listing.
- Drinks on the train. The Wine Train pours one welcome glass; further drinks are sold on board.
- Rooms. August to October is the dearest stretch, with October the peak; Lonely Planet suggests booking autumn rooms at least four months ahead.
- Wine to take home. Average tasting-room purchases are up 40% over five years, says the SVB data cited by the Chronicle. Set a number before the first pour.

Lunch, three wineries and a guide who books them for you. Add the tasting fees on the day.
