The Napa tours, compared

Eleven ways to spend a day in wine country, from a picnic among boutique cellars to an open-air trolley. Here is which ones stay in Napa, which slip off to Sonoma, and who each suits.

Search for a Napa wine tour and you get two kinds of product under one name. Some start in the valley, with a local guide and two or three boutique wineries booked ahead. Others start in San Francisco, with a coach, a Golden Gate photo stop and tastings included, and they often spend much of the day in Sonoma.

Neither is wrong. They suit different trips. Here are all eleven tours on this site sorted by type, with an honest count of where the wineries are.

The quick answer

Staying in Napa: book the picnic lunch tour for three boutique wineries and a picnic, or the trolley for a lighter, social day. Coming from San Francisco: the Napa and Sonoma tour or the half day give you included tastings; the half day is the one that stays entirely in Napa. Couples who want their own pace should look at the private car or the e-bike tour. The Wine Train is a long lunch on rails with no winery stops.

What is the best wine tour in Napa?

If you are staying in the valley, the picnic lunch tour. If you are coming from San Francisco for the day, the Napa and Sonoma tour, or the half day if you want to stay in Napa itself.

Best depends on where you sleep. The single biggest choice is whether the day starts in Napa or in San Francisco, because that decides whether you spend two to four hours on the road and whether your tastings are included.

Which tours actually start in Napa?

Five: the picnic lunch tour, the open-air trolley, the e-bike tour from Yountville, the ATV ride at Backstage Winery and the Wine Train.

The picnic lunch tour picks you up at hotels in Napa, Yountville, St. Helena or American Canyon, or meets at Main and 5th in downtown Napa. A guide takes up to 14 guests to three boutique wineries, about an hour or more at each, with barrel rooms and a picnic of sandwiches, cheese and fruit. The wineries are the guide's choice and change. Fees are yours.

The trolley leaves at 10am from the Oxbow Public Market car park in an open-sided copy of a San Francisco cable car. It visits three of Backstage Winery, Napa Cellars, Jean Edwards, Rutherford Ranch and Monticello, with lunch at one. Bring sunglasses. Budget for tasting fees, which the listing says are paid on the day.

The e-bike tour rides 12 to 17 mostly flat miles from Yountville, with one winery on the half day and two plus a Bouchon Bakery picnic on the full day. A van carries any wine you buy. The ATV tour is 1.5 hours on quad bikes through Backstage Winery's vineyards, then five wines and charcuterie. The Wine Train is lunch or dinner in a glass-dome car; it stops at no wineries on this package, and the Wine Train guide explains the other options.

How much of a Napa day trip from San Francisco is in Sonoma?

Often most of it. On the Muir Woods day two of the three wineries are in Sonoma, lunch is on Sonoma Plaza, and only Ru Vango is in Napa. Only the Big Bus half day stays entirely in Napa.

Sonoma sits between San Francisco and Napa, its fees run lower and many of its wineries take walk-ins, so coach operators lean on it. Here is what each listing names:

Artesa and Madonna are in Los Carneros, the cool district at the south end of the valley that straddles both counties. They are Napa, but not the Napa of Highway 29, Oakville and St. Helena that most people picture. None of this makes these bad tours. It makes them wine-country tours rather than Napa Valley tours. If seeing the valley floor matters to you, stay overnight and book a Napa-based day, or read Napa or Sonoma first.

Which tour suits first-timers, couples, families and tight budgets?

First-timers staying in Napa: the picnic tour. Couples: the private car or the e-bike. Families: the Muir Woods day, which takes children from 6. Budget: the half day at $110 with tastings included.

  • First-timers in the valley: the picnic tour. A guide who explains barrel rooms and blending, three different wineries and no driving.
  • First-timers in San Francisco: the Napa and Sonoma tour for the classic day, the premium tour if 12 guests at most matters to you.
  • Couples: the private car if you want to choose the wineries, the e-bike if you want to move. The Wine Train dinner is the date-night option.
  • Families: most wine tours are 21 and over. The Muir Woods day takes children from 6, and the redwoods are the part they will enjoy. Under-21s cannot taste on any tour.
  • Budget: the half day at $110, two Napa wineries with tastings included and a 24-hour hop-on hop-off bus pass in San Francisco thrown in.
  • Something different: the ATV ride for 2 to 5 guests aged 14 and over (the tasting is for 21+).

Which Napa wineries are best for first-timers?

Wineries that show you how wine is made and pour a broad range: Robert Mondavi in Oakville, Domaine Carneros for sparkling wine, Sterling for the gondola and V. Sattui for an easy, no-fuss start.

  • Robert Mondavi Winery, Oakville. The estate reopened on April 20, 2026 after a three-year renovation, with Cliff May's arch and tower restored and a new To Kalon Cellar. A good place to learn what Napa Cabernet is about. Book via the website or Tock.
  • Domaine Carneros, Carneros. Sparkling wine on a terrace, an easy start for people who don't drink much red. Reservations are required, there is no waitlist and it is 21+ only (domainecarneros.com).
  • Sterling Vineyards, Calistoga. A gondola rises about 300 feet to the tasting rooms. Walk-ins are welcome, and the Sterling Stroll costs $55 (sterlingvineyards.com).
  • V. Sattui, St. Helena. Deli, picnic grounds and wines by the glass without a booking; open 9:30am to 6pm daily.
  • Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga. A 136,000 square foot castle with an hour-long underground tour. Reservation only.

On a guided tour you don't choose, and that is part of the point: the picnic tour goes to small family cellars you would not find on a map. Napa has about 475 physical wineries and 95% of them are family owned, per the Napa Valley Vintners.

What are the top wineries to visit in Napa Valley?

There is no official ranking. The names first-time visitors ask about most are Robert Mondavi, Castello di Amorosa, Domaine Carneros, Sterling, V. Sattui, Chateau Montelena and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.

Lists of the top 5 or top 10 Napa wineries are opinion, ours included. Here are ten names that come up again and again, and why, in no order:

  1. Robert Mondavi Winery: the reopened Oakville landmark, 60 years old in 2026.
  2. Castello di Amorosa: the castle, built to evoke 14th-century Tuscany.
  3. Domaine Carneros: the chateau and the sparkling wine.
  4. Sterling Vineyards: the gondola and the view.
  5. V. Sattui: picnics, the deli and no-reservation tasting.
  6. Chateau Montelena: its 1973 Chardonnay won the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
  7. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars: its 1973 Cabernet won the red flight the same day.
  8. Charles Krug: one of the two wineries on the Wine Train's Legacy Experience.
  9. Grgich Hills: Mike Grgich made the winning Montelena Chardonnay; the Wine Train runs a grape stomp there.
  10. Artesa: the Carneros winery that the premium and Napa and Sonoma tours visit.

For a top 5 to fit in one trip, take Mondavi, Domaine Carneros, Sterling, Castello and V. Sattui: one classic, one sparkling, one view, one spectacle, one picnic. Spread them over two days, because Carneros and Calistoga are at opposite ends of a 30-mile valley.

What is the prettiest winery in Napa, and the most visited?

For looks, Castello di Amorosa, the Domaine Carneros chateau and the view from Sterling's hilltop top most lists. Sterling has been called one of Napa's most visited wineries.

Pretty is personal. Castello di Amorosa is the most dramatic, with towers and underground cellars that stay about 58°F. Domaine Carneros sits like a French chateau above its vines. Sterling's gondola climbs about 300 feet for a view across the north of the valley, and it closes when the temperature passes 100°F. The new Robert Mondavi buildings are the quiet, elegant choice.

Napa publishes no visitor counts per winery. The San Francisco Chronicle has called Sterling one of Napa's most visited, and the wineries that take walk-ins and coaches, such as V. Sattui, are the busiest you'll see on a Saturday. For quiet, go small: that is where a boutique tour earns its fee.

Should you take a tour or drive yourself?

Take a tour or hire a driver if anyone in the car will taste. California's limit is 0.08% BAC, and three seated tastings add up.

Napa's vintners put it simply: bring a designated driver or hire a local tour and transportation company. Driving yourself makes sense if one person is happy not to drink, and you will need to book every winery yourself, at two or three a day.

A tour also solves the booking problem. Most Napa wineries want an appointment, popular ones book up weeks ahead, and a guide with regular slots gets in where a last-minute couple won't. How to build a day yourself is in how to plan a Napa wine day; what it costs either way is in the cost guide.

Leave the car at the hotel: pickup in Napa, Yountville or St. Helena, three wineries and lunch.
